Course overview - 3 steps to become an electrician
Navigating training can be complex, especially when dealing with different colleges, third-party NVQ assessors, and external
assessment centers.
At Rebus Training, we streamline your entire journey. From your first evening class to your final AM2 assessment, you will deal exclusively
with our in-house team based at our Stoke-on-Trent training centre.

Step 1 - Knowledge Units
Our evening courses start late September each year. You will attend two nights a week during years one and two, completing theory and
practical training. In addition, you will be given work to self-study and online courses to complete. By completing additional studies at
home/work, we can provide you with more practical training during your evening course.
You will work towards eight knowledge units that are assessed and certificated separately. You will complete a range of assessments,
including multiple-choice tests, written assignments and practical assessments for the following units:
- Unit 101 - Understand health, safety and environmental considerations
- Unit 103 - Electrical scientific principles and technologies
- Unit 104 - Understand design and installation practices and procedures
- Unit 105 - Understand how to plan and oversee electrical work activities
- Unit 107 - Understand terminations and connections of conductors
- Unit 312/112 - Inspection, testing, commissioning
- Unit 114 - Understand fault diagnosis rectification
- Unit 026 - Understand the requirements for electrical installations BS7671:2018(2026).
During your two years of study you will also undertake the current 18th Edition exam and be provided with a City
& Guilds 2382 certificate on completion. This can be completed as a 3 day course.
Towards the end of year 2 you will need to attend approximately seven days of training/assessment.
Step 2 - Performance/NVQ Units
The six performance units are closely matched to your knowledge units, i.e. before you show us you can test on site, you will learn
how to test here at Rebus. The difference is that instead of assessing your understanding of a topic, we will assess how you can apply that
knowledge in a real work environment.
The performance units cover the range of work an electrician typically completes on-site, from ensuring it is safe to start work to
inspection and testing and final job handover. We will assess how you do this using the following methods:
- On-site observation - we will observe you working on-site on a minimum of two occasions
- Walk and talk - we may take a look at work you have recently completed following an on-site observation

Witness testimony - we may ask a qualified electrician that has worked with you to provide written testimony to validate and authenticate
work seen as part of a walk and talk assessment

Professional discussion - we will ask you to collect a photographic storyboard of your completed work. We will then record a discussion with
you and ask you to provide further information about what you were doing and why.
Step 3 - AM2 Assessment
After completing your knowledge and performance units, you will undertake your AM2 assessment. This is your final 'trade test'
conducted in our AM2 assessment centre. You will put into practice everything you have learned and experienced during this 2.5-day
assessment. The AM2 assessment includes electrical installation work, inspection and testing, and fault finding. For full details, see our

You are now qualified!
Once the three stages above are complete, we will apply for a City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical Certificate for you and a City &
Guilds Level 3 Inspection and Testing qualification in Initial Verification.
You can then apply to ECS for an Electricians Gold Card.
